Sigmund Thun Gorge in Kaprun
In the Late Ice Age around 14,000 years ago, the Kaprun Valley was covered by a mighty glacier. Slowly flowing towards the valley, it hewed the hard mica schist of the Mais- and Bürgkogel. The now melted glacier cleft out a valley, through which the Kapruner Ache then flowed. On its 320 m-long path through the Sigmund Thun Gorge, the river has cut its way down to depths of as much as 32 metres, creating whirlpools, sinkholes and striking examples of smoothing. This ongoing process attests to the earliest stages of the creation of the Kaprun Valley itself.
